During this same period, students in a Maryland middle school coordinated with colleagues in a St. Petersburg school on an environmental project.
Unfortunately, all plans for 2020 were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
FUTURE PLANS
Education exchanges will continue, coordinated by Julie Mamunes.
We expect a delegation again sponsored through Open World of the Library of Congress, recently renamed Congressional Office for International Leadership (COIL), to spend a week in Maryland homes for a program focused on our youth, covering the broad issues of societal demands, education, COVID-19 effects, physical and mental health, etc.
Once possible again, a small delegation of educators will be traveling from Maryland to Leningrad for direct interaction with educators and schools there.
We expect to continue hosting COIL sponsored delegations here as well as broadening the network of those interested in the sister state work. Additionally, we anticipate activities for those interested to include visits to the Russian Embassy, relevant lectures and relevant cultural events.
In the future, we are hopeful that representatives of the Leningrad government may have the opportunity to visit us. In the past we have hosted several from the legislative branch, but few from the executive branch, with whom we have our primary interaction.
In future years, we may again sponsor an official visit of Marylanders, both elected officials and interested citizens, as we did so successfully in 2012.
