ABOUT
Located in the southwestern region of South Korea, Jeollanam-do (South Jeolla Province) is one of the country’s greenest provinces, known for its rolling hills and more than 3,500 miles of coastline. The province’s warm southern climate makes Jeollanam-do a prominent agricultural region. Agriculture employs 40% of the province’s workforce. Jeollanam-do is also the birthplace of Maryland’s First Lady Yumi Hogan.
Government
Kim Kap-Seop has been acting governor of Jeollanam-do since May 2017, succeeding Lee Nak-Yon, who left the position to become the 45th Prime Minister of South Korea.
INITIATIVES
The Jeollanam-do Maryland Sister State status was inaugurated in September 2017 with a Memorandum of Understanding signed by Maryland Secretary of State John C. Wobensmith and Jeollanam-do Acting Governor Kim Kap-Seop. First Lady Yumi Hogan was in attendance for the signing and a tree planting ceremony while participating on a trade and diplomatic mission in South Korea on behalf of the Maryland Department of Commerce.
